The Power of Self-Care for High Achievers Part 3

Self-care is essential for high achievers during and after their time in therapy. Even if you are working hard to make progress in therapy, your mental and physical health should never take a backseat. Self-care can help you manage stress, boost your self-esteem, and enhance your quality of life.

Let's Talk About the 8 Dimensions of Wellness and How to Incorporate Them into Self-Care

The 8 dimensions of wellness are physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, occupational, financial, and social.

Physical:

By taking care of your physical health, you can improve the way you feel mentally and emotionally. This can include activities such as eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and managing stress.

Emotional:

It is important to focus on learning healthy coping skills and recognizing our emotions. This can include activities such as therapy, journaling, connecting with supportive people, and engaging in self-reflection.

Intellectual:

It is important to challenge and stimulate our minds by engaging in activities that will help us grow. Examples of this can include reading, learning a new language, attending educational classes, or playing brain games.

Spiritual:

It is important to make time to connect with your spiritual side. This can include activities such as meditation, prayer, yoga, or engaging in creative hobbies.

Environmental:

By connecting with nature, we are able to get a sense of peace. This can include activities such as taking walks outside, gardening or spending time in nature.

Occupational:

It is important to find purpose and meaning in our work. This can include activities such as setting goals for ourselves, taking on new challenges, or learning new skills.

Financial:

It is important to be mindful of our financial situation and strive to maintain a healthy budget. This can include activities such as monitoring our spending, creating a budget and setting financial goals.

Social:

It is important to stay connected with people in our lives. This can include activities such as social media, virtual gatherings with friends and family, or spending quality time in person.

How to Create An Effective Self-Care Plan That You Can Modify as Your Go Along?

It's important to create a self-care plan that works for you and is flexible enough to accommodate any changes. One place we often fall short is thinking that once we create a plan, it will work for anything and everything. That is where we are wrong. Things change as the seasons change and our needs are different. Just like what helped you last week may not help you this week. Here are some tips on how to create a self-care plan:

• Start by reflecting on what you need. Take some time to think about what your current needs are and what has been helping you.

• Take a holistic approach. Consider the 8 dimensions of wellness and think about how each area impacts you and your overall well-being.

• Make a list of activities that you will do. This can include things like reading, exercising, connecting with supportive people in your life, and engaging in creative hobbies.

• Schedule your activities. Set aside time each day or week to do the activities that you have listed out.

• Know that it’s okay to adjust your plan. Remember that your needs may change and it’s important to be open to adjusting your plan as needed.

• Check in with yourself. Take time each day to pause and reflect on how you are feeling and what you need.

Self-care is an important part of our overall well-being and it’s essential to make time for it in our daily lives. Creating an effective self-care plan can help us stay grounded and connected to ourselves. With the tips mentioned above, you are on your way to creating a plan that works for you and can be modified as you go along.
