Are you feeling stressed & overwhelmed?

Do you feel like you're spinning your wheels and stuck in unhealthy patterns?

Would you like to find ways to focus more on the things that are most important to you?

Hello! I’m Lorie Kaplan, and I’d like to welcome you to my “About Me” page! If you are struggling in some way, or simply looking to improve your overall well-being, then I’d like to help. Sometimes just asking for help can be hard, so I appreciate that you’re reaching out.

I enjoy helping people who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including diverse social, economic, racial, gender identity, and sexual orientation backgrounds. A breadth of diversity means that no single approach to counseling works for everyone. For that reason, I will take time to learn about you, and tailor our work to your unique needs.

My Work Experience & Counseling Training

My own diverse background informs my work. I earned a PhD in Education from the University of Missouri, and had a 20-year career in the area of professional development. Coaching became a natural extension of my work, and I continue to use elements of life and wellness coaching with my clients. Coaching can involve setting goals and taking steps toward achieving them. It can also entail identifying your unique strengths, and finding ways to harness their power.

I also have a Masters in Counseling from Stephens College.  I provided group and individual counseling to students at the Stephens Counseling Center. Through counseling, I have had the opportunity to help people dealing with issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, trauma, relationships, life transitions and other areas.

My Approach to Counseling

Every therapist uses slightly different treatment modalities or tools.  I believe it's critical to use counseling practices that research has shown to be effective. Therefore, I've sought out trainings on specific types of counseling that are backed by research.  I enjoy using acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), positive psychology, mindfulness-based therapy, and sandtray therapy. Each of these approaches can help move you toward greater awareness, self-acceptance, and well-being. I also know that being heard and accepted in counseling is very important, and so I try to listen closely to make sure that I’m understanding you and your needs as best I can.

My Motivation as a Counselor

I believe most people can benefit from counseling at some point in their life.  I've seen the power of counseling to help people through the rough moments. My personality is such that, I love sharing strategies with people to help them improve their general wellbeing.  These are the reasons that I left a successful career in the field of education to become a counselor.  I want to help people get unstuck and create a life true to their own values & goals.

My number one personal passion is my family. I’ve been married for more than 20 years. My husband and I have a son who is currently in high school. We also have furry feline family members we adore, Ezzie and Ida!
