Our lives as humans are full of stories. Stories of our past, present, and future. Stories we are told by others, and stories we tell ourselves. We create an understanding of our world, make judgments, and navigate lives based on these narratives. When we experience an event, we often judge it as good or bad. Then, our minds tuck away information about how to get through similar events in the future. But, what if you experience something so devastating and earth-shattering, like grief, you may not know how to handle our emotions.

Grief Shatters Our Idea of “Normal”

When someone you love dies, like a parent, sibling, or child, you experience shock and devastation. It often takes our breath away. Then, you are suddenly faced with the reality of continuing your life without that person by your side. You might feel lost. And you may not know how to move forward in your life. The things that used to give your life purpose and meaning is now gone.

  • You own it. You own the way you experience grief. No one can tell you what you know or feel; no one can write it for you. That feeling of ownership is powerful.

  • You face your experience rather than avoid it. Avoidance is a natural human reaction to discomfort and pain. In the short-term, it is incredibly effective. But, in the long-term, it can damage your well-being. Narrative interventions allow you to confront your experience in a safe way, rather than push it away.

  • Your creativity drives the narrative. There are many ways to use Narrative Therapy other than putting pen to paper. For example, roleplay, creating a timeline, images, and metaphors, and many other interventions are creative ways to ensure to tell your story.

  • The way you tell your story can help you identify your values. This will point you in a direction to help you make decisions in the future.
